Trust politicians? How do you decide?

North Carolinians want to trust their president. They rank that as the top consideration for which candidate they support, according to a new Observer/WCNC Poll. Nearly nine out of 10 of likely voters surveyed said trust would play a big role in determining their vote.

Most of those surveyed (54 percent) give John McCain the highest marks for trust. Close behind is Barack Obama, at 48 percent. Only 25 percent think Hillary Clinton can be trustedIt makes sense that we Tar Heels value honesty. The state motto is “Esse Quam Videri.” That means “To Be Rather Than to Seem.”

But how to define trust? And how to gauge whether you can trust a presidential candidate? With local (and some statewide) candidates it’s easy: Chances are, you know their reputation, their business and even their families. Not so for presidential politics.

How do you identify honesty and trustworthiness in a political candidate? And who has it this time around and who doesn’t?

  1. McCain and Hillary. And only McCain and Hillary. The other has made race such an issue and blames it on the McCain and Hillary. You have to trust by what you have lived through and what you have seen. Not by what someone is trying to persuade you of and in that same tone saying we need to change. Change what? You want to see a new world order of something. Constantly saying you are not seeing the whole picture. I just don't trust that. I will stick with what I know, McCain and Hillary.

  3. My theory is that by the time politicians reach the level of running for national office, they have long since sold their souls to many, many special interests. I really, truly do not trust any one of them. Their collective record is not very good.

  7. I don't trust the person who says we'll be in Iraq for the next 100 years, that's for sure. We shouldn't have invaded that country in the first place and it's been a cluster-mess since.

I trust the person who says they are ready for change, because believe me, this country is so ready for a change from the last 7.5 years of h-e-double hockey sticks we've been put through.

What sickens me is how divided we are that so many people cannot embrace a candidate because of their sex or skin color. I don't trust Americans to do the right thing.

and gene, how many deferments did Cheney get? how did little georgie manage to get out of serving? puhleeze!

  8. Who would you trust to be a good judge of character?

I am a retired disabled veteran that has worked for the Department of Defense for over 26 years. It is my opinion that the most important issue of this and every election is the national security of the Untied States of America. It is extremely dangerous to say that a candidates character should not be looked at. It is important to look at every candidates qualifications and also their associations as we are judged by the company we keep. If the American people do not think that Senator Obama does not share the views of Rev. Wright than what does that say about Senator Obama's perceptions of other people and his ability to discern who the American government should trust. It is not only fair that Americans look at who Senator Obama associates with but it is imperative that we know why Senator Obama associates with people like Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers. This election is extremely important and the American people have not only a right but an obligation to look at the candidates qualifications and character. Senator Obama is a politician and will say or do anything to get elected. I have read Senator Obama's book "The Audacity of Hope" and found several things in this book very disturbing. There are too many unknowns about Senator Obama.
