Why they didn't vote for McCrory

The John W. Pope Civitas Institute has posted a list of voter comments on why they didn't vote for Bev Perdue or didn't vote for Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory for N.C. governor. Plenty of comments were predictable: People wanted to vote Republican, or Democratic, or they "liked" one candidate or the other, or said they didn't know much about one candidate or the other.

Among reasons people didn't vote for Perdue (spelling and punctuation unchanged):
• No woman
• Because she whines
• Because I like Pat McCrory and he's the mayor of the city I live in
• Well i’m in charlotte and I am extremely impressed with him
• I never vote Democrat.
• Pro-abortion
• We have someone good in why take him away

Among reasons people didn't vote for McCrory:
• Needed a woman in office
• Didn't like demeanor
• He wasn't believable
• His opinions are so bad
• Because he is for off shore drilling and she is not
• Felt his values were big city and she lives in a small town
• Because he was the mayor of charlotte and I felt like charlotte would play too big role in his agenda
• Anti-environmentalist
• Because I live in charlotte and I think he's done a sh- - - - job

My uncle down in Wilmington voted a straight GOP ticket EXCEPT for governor; he voted for Perdue. His reasoning was that even though Perdue is just plain dumb, McCrory opposed a major port project down near Wilmington, and that reason alone was enough not to vote for him.

He wasn't from eastern North Carolina, so that's why they didnt' vote for him.

I don't know why the republicans keep running Charlotte mayors!

Perdue ran on a platform of: "If you elect me I will ignore Charlotte". She was very straightforward about that. I can understand why someone outside of Mecklenburg would vote for her but I do not understand how anyone who has to commute to and in Charlotte could have possibly voted for her. Charlotte will continue to get ignored by Raleigh. If you voted for Perdue, you have NO right to complain about our roads or infrastructure in the future.

Perhaps it was a simple matter of voters not being interested in what McCrory had to offer? Personally, I've never been impressed with him as a mayor. The sooner he leaves office, the better off Charlotte will be.

I agree with Danny's comment. Anybody that lives in Mecklenburg County and did not vote for Pat needs to think about what they just did. According to the results there are just a little bit over 50% people that did not vote for him. Pretty sad actually, because even if you did not like him or his views at least he would have improved your county. But I guess over 50% don't really care about that so we will continue to improve Raleigh instead and we can just stay in the dark in Charlotte, just like 277 sits in darkness.

I a former resident of Charlotte, now living in the southern coastal area of NC. I have talked with voters who voted staight Republican, except for the Governor's race. Mr. McCrory failed to realize how serious his remarks about not supporting the state ports were taken. Voters were listening like never before in this election. Also, from a personal prespevtive, he did not present himself in a positive manner. His smile was tooo smug!!!!
Demeanor is everything, when the people listening to you, don't know anything about you.

Charlotte is a good business town. Why completely ruin that by electing a Democrat - who will tax things into extinction???

The same straight-ticket Democrat voters that showed Raleigh they can continue to hose us and ignore us by not supporting McCrory also sent Nick Mackey to the State house - instead of where he REALLY belongs - in jail - and made George Dunlap (Dumb Flap?) a Char-Meck commissioner.

All in favor of electing non-whites to office - no problems whatsoever - just not THESE two trouble-making idiots.

I am a straight party DEM voter and I thought about voting for McCroy, but he's anti-choice and against stem cell research. Then I remembered how he always pandered to W et al and just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I agree with Retlaw on one of his points. All the people who voted for Bev Perdue did not know anything about either candidate , just the same way they knew nothing of our president elecet Obama. All they were interested in was how big a hand out they were going to receive from the democrats. Ridiculous !!!! There should be an IQ test to vote, Republicans would always win by a lindslide so I guess that wouldn't be "Fair" either.

If there were an IQ test to vote then GW would never have been able to vote for himself.

I'm a Democrat that really believed Pat was the best choice for the state. However moronic rants like yours do not take into account that there is more than one point of view.

I wanted to vote for a local in McCrory.

However, I couldn't get past the high crime rates in Charlotte (didnt NC law enforcement endorse Perdue?) and poor school system in Charlotte and off shore drilling.

Poor Pat did have problems especially not garnering the support of the public safety community- a big voting block. Pat's record is to support the League of Municipalities stance of limiting local government retiree benefits. To add salt to the wound he was against increasing the police departments budget for more officers and other vital resources.

Despite what he said his record crushed him.

This is a city who's crime is at an all time high on his watch. They can't even keep light bulbs in the street lights but he allowed that arena to be built for the rich by the rich despite of the voters wishes. Tell me how many other places that 250 million could be used now. He's a fraud who only looks out for those like him(developed this city beyond it's means and incouraged it) And I'm a republican who saw he can't conmnect with the grass root needs of this city, how can he be effective on the state level??

Anonymous said...

Let's not forget about the fact that the people of Charlotte voted against the arena and he turned around and did it anyway. For me, the decision came down to the lack of respect he displayed toward his constituents.

I'm an unaffiliated voter (formerly a lifelong Democrat) from Charlotte who has voted for McCrory for mayor the last three or four times. He has been an effective mayor in my opinion because he has been able to sell our city to corporate entities who have set up shop here as a result. I voted against him for governor because I hoped he would continue as our mayor, but it looks like that may not happen now. If McCrory does not continue as mayor, I think Anthony Foxx would be an excellent choice to succeed him.

Let's look at the facts here... we currently have a Democrat for Governor who ran our state budget into the ground, was linked to corrupt legislators, wrecked the state's mental health care system (then blamed everyone else), oversees a state transportation department that has had federal funding suspended because they failed the audit and we STILL have Democratic voters who claim he's a great governor!

Stupid.

Uh... that's the Democratic led school board, NOT the Mayor!

Just like all those Obama voters who thought the Republicans controlled the House and Senate, when in fact, they've been in Democrat hands since the last election!

Anonymous 11:56,

I always wonder how you folks can call it "pro choice" when the only person who gets a choice is someone who apparently had already made a bad one to begin with!

Pro abortion advocates are right about one thing, it IS a civil rights issue... but they misunderstand the civil right being violated.

The issue is in allowing the right to life to be determined by whether or not someone wants that person to live. That's what abortion does, it limits the right to live based upon whether or not that child is wanted!

Without the right to life, no other civil rights can ever apply and they are without value. Since 1972, we have murdered enough unborn babies to replace the entire population of Canada!

To top it all off, most "pro choice" people I have encountered actually oppose the execution of convicted murderers while vigorously defending killing innocent unborn babies!

I am originally from Wilmington and have been living in charlotte for about 14 years. I didn't vote for Pat because of the major project in downtown wilmington that Pat opposed and the fact that he don't want to support the state ports really say enough for me to not vote for him. I still have a great amount of property in downtown Wilmington and I all for keeping that area rising in the future. Also I don't think Pat has been a great mayor for Charlotte....case in point Arena! Nascar Hall of Fame a waste of money. He has never gotten my vote and he never will get my vote. I voted for Perdu as well as president elect Barack Obama and I really don't care who like it or who don't like it my vote, my choice.

From seeing him in daily life. Obnoxious, rude, treats people in stores very badly, have seen him screaming at his own employees. Charlotte is still a small town in that respect.

Anonymous said...

if you live in the Charmeck area and voted for Perdue, you are a moron. Plain and simple. Even if you think crime is high and schools are crappy and the roads suck, you just put someone in office who badmouthed Charlotte in every other area of the state. You chose someone who cares NOTHING about Charlotte rather than someone who cares at least somewhat. Smart move.. For every other person in the state, of course they would like all the tax money Charlotte generates spread out to them instead of us, so of course they would vote Perdue.

Haven't liked McCrory since he sat on the council. I think the poor leadership he showed during the the gas and banking crises was his biggest downfall in Charlotte.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Danny. Raleigh is going to keep ignoring us, just like they have done in the past. And I can not understand how 50% of Mecklemburg did not vote for McCrory. It's ridiculous.Pat has done a great job in Charlotte, everyone knows that.

Anonymous said...

Will someone please tell me where he has done a great job in charlotte? Give me a break he is a big joke just like most other republicans.

Nothing against all those who voted for Obama on their ticket, but a majortiy of the Obama voters voted straight ticket. Why?

Because liberal campaigners distributed materials promoting voters to vote straight ticket to make things quicker and easier. Because some ppl may have taken the time to think about why they were voting for Obama, but didn't think 1 sec about the other canidates - but voted straight ticket anyway.

This is not a racist comment, but if Obama had been the republican presidential canidate - McCrory would be the NC govenor right now.

I live in Charlotte and have voted for McCrory as Mayor...but in his run for Governor he came across too phony and smerky in the TV commercials...that turned off a lot of people I know. It's too bad, the state needed him.

Anonymous said...

Because people chose to vote straight party ticket is not why he is not the governor. It was their choice to vote for who they wanted and apparently they didn't want Pat. It is Pat's fault not the people who didn't vote for him he really is rude and don't give a hoot about what the people want it's all about his friends and the rich to Pat McCrory well that it what you get Mr Pat McCrory and I sure hope Anthony Foxx beats you as well and send you packing up to go home.

Anonymous said...

I bet if you poll half the NC (and more than half the Charlotte) voters who voted straight ticket Democrat Part - they could not tell you who was running for governor of NC on Nov 4th.

You could have put Barney Rubble in as the liberal governor candidate and you would have been shocked at how many ppl still would have voted straight ticket. It was quite clear across the country that a majority of Obama's voters voted straight ticket at the urging of liberal campaigners and put zero thought into it.

Point was proven in Georgia this week. The did a revote and guess who won - by a large margin? Wasn't the democratic candidate... why? Obama wasn't on the ticket this time.

McCrory has built up the rich parts of Charlotte and let the other 2/3 fester. He makes excuses for everything that is wrong with Charlotte and doesn't take any responsibility. Everything is either Raleigh's fault or "it's not just Charlotte, it ia a problem everywhere." Note to Pat: if you plan to run for statewide office, don't spend your career blaming other parts of the state for all of your failures. And bring some of that prosperity to the rest of Charlotte, because one of these days those parts of town might show up to vote...which is exactly what happened.

Unknown said...

The ignorance displayed by the Perdue voters is amazing. Apparently every bad thing to ever happen in Charlotte can be laid at McCrory's feet, and not the Democrats who actually do the legislating in the city/county.
