No bonuses for CMS senior staff

Maybe President Barack Obama got through to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' leadership too. On Thursday Obama scolded Wall Street bankers who received millions of dollars in bonuses last year, calling the payouts "shameful" and irresponsible. "Thew will be a time for them to get bonuses," Obama said. "Now's not that time."

That's what CMS superintendent Peter Gorman said this morning too. There will be no bonuses for senior staff this year, he said during the discussion with school board members of anticipated big budget cuts.

Gorman gave that as an example of cuts already being made. But given the furor over clueless bank executives giving out big bonuses while their companies imploded, his public announcement might have been attempt to stave off a potential storm here too.

  2. Why is anyone talking about budget cuts in our state's schools?

What ever happened to the Education Lottery that was marketed as the answer to all of North Carolina's problems when it came to education funding?

With all the money that people have thrown away on lottery tickets, one would think our schools would be in great shape.

  4. GOOD!!! Educators deserve more than what we get and yet most of us never complain- educators go into teaching because we want to make a difference- NOT for the money. Why is it when the educators get downtown jobs, they lose all that and only want more money....sad!!!

  6. No bonuses for Senior staff, but what about Executive Staff? Will their bonuses be withheld, as well? Executive Staff = all the "Chiefs" (of Staff, Accountability Officer, Operating Officer, Financial Officer) as well as all the Area/Learning Community Superintendents.

Senior Staff typically include all the people who report to the aforementioned.

  8. Why doesn't the senior and executive staff take a 10-20% paycut. I'm sure their standard of living won't be affective, and if it does "welcome to the real world."

  9. why do they even get bonuses in the first place?

  11. Even better, how about CMS cuts out the take home cars for "senior" staff & area "whatevers", the Blackberry-Cell phone services for principals, and the 10am-2pm central office staff that don't have a job description. There should never be a cut made that takes a teacher or assistant out of a classroom.
